To take a screenshot on the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, or iPhone 4, you simply press the home button and the lock button at the same time, as shown below.

After the screenshot has been taken, the screen with flash quickly and save the image in your Photos app on the Camera Roll.
