How to Setup and Secure a Wireless Network Using a Linksys Router

(3 votes, average 5.00 out of 5)
  1. First thing to do is setup your router. Make sure you hook up the power cable, the modem, and all wired computers to the router. Once this has been done, verify that you can see the wireless network associated with your router. A newly created network will most likely be named 'linksys'.
  2. Open a web browser on one of the computers connected to the network. Once the web browser is open, type http://192.168.1.1 into the address bar. This will take you to the routers build-in administrator portal. You will be prompted to enter a username and password before accessing the portal. If you have not changed this setting on your router previously, enter admin for the password and leave the username blank. Once logged in, you will see the setup page, like the one below:

  3. Enter a name for your router in the Router Name field. Then save your settings.

  4. Click on the Wireless Tab on the top black bar.
  5. In the Wireless Network Name (SSID) field, type a unique name for your router. This name will be the name of the network that is broadcasted.

  6. In the Wireless Channel field, select any channel. It is recommended to use a channel above 6 or 7. The lower the channel, the less the range. However, the higher the channel the more interference you will be exposed to.
  7. Next, click on the Wireless Security Tab on the purple bar.
  8. Choose a security mode of WPA2, or WPA if WPA2 does not exist. Then choose a password to type into the shared key field. Pick a password that is easy for you to remember, but hard for someone else to guess. When you are finished, save your settings by clicking on the save settings button.

  9. To make sure your route is secure, you will want to change the standard password to a different one. To do this, click on the Administrator tab on the black bar.
  10. You should come to this page, where you will be able to change the password:

  11. Once you've picked a password, be sure to click the Save Settings button.
